Children from Jakarta school commemorate Khojaly on Universal Children’s Day

By resolution 836(IX) of 14 December 1954, the General Assembly of the United Nations recommended that all countries institute a Universal Children's Day, to be observed as a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children. 

A letter and drawing have been received from Jakarta, Indonesia on November 20th, 2009. According to the letter Indonesian children are going to commemorate Khojaly massacre on the 20th of November (Universal Children’s

Day). “We hope that this kind of massacres never happen again. We wish peace to all over the world” wrote children of Harapan Ibu Elementary school in Jakarta. 

613 civilians, including 83 children were brutally killed during the Khojaly massacre in the midnight of the 25th of February in 1992. 

The Khojaly Massacre was described by Human Rights Watch as "the largest massacre to date in the conflict" over Nagorno-Karabakh. Memorial, the Moscow-based human rights group, stated in their report that the mass killing of civilians in Khojaly could not be justified under any circumstances and that actions of Armenian militants were in gross violation of a number of basic international human rights conventions. Estimating the number of the civilians killed in the massacre, Human Rights Watch stated that "there are no exact figures for the number of Azeri civilians killed because Karabakh Armenian forces gained control of the area after the massacre". 

Justice for Khojaly campaign has been successfully launched in more than 25 countries of the world. More than 120 000 indviduals and 119 organizations joined the campaign. The Campaign is aimed at raising international civil awareness through the demonstration of creative photos and images of people who suffered in Khojaly Massacre.
