Let’s Make Reading and Writing Fun

Reading and writing are two important activities that should be learnt by students in order to broaden their knowledge and increase their creativity. However, nowadays, instead of reading and writing, they likely more enjoy watching TV or playing game.

In order to encourage our students to love reading and writing, The Bilingual Program of Harapan Ibu Islamic Elementary School held an event called Fun Reading and Writing on 17-22 October 2011.

We started the event with a book fair sponsored by some book publishers. It was held from Monday to Saturday (17-22 October 2011) on school's corridor. Hopefully, by visiting the book fair and buying some books they chose there, the students would start to enjoy reading.

On Thursday, 20th Oct 2011, we held story-telling competition. This competition is unique because parents (mom or dad) should accompany his/her child in the competition. We chose 3 finalists who must perform on stage on Saturday, 22 Oct 2011. Here are the finalists who were also the winners; Hanun and her mom (the 1st), Shida and her mom (the 2nd), and Jeihan and her mom (the 3rd) winners.

We also arranged some competitions for the 1st graders to the 6th graders on Friday, 21 Oct 2011. The 1st graders took apart in coloring and arranging story. The 2nd graders had writing competition by arranging the serial pictures and write a short story. The 3rd graders had writing competition. They wrote a story based on the pictures provided. Meanwhile the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders had writing workshop and they also took apart in writing competition based on the themes provided by the teachers.

We completed the event by showing on stage performance, on Saturday, 22 Oct 2011. The stage performance was opened by the Head of Harapan Ibu Foundation, Dra. Hj. Nunuk Murdiati Sulastomo, by poetry reading. It also involved some other performers such as Kak Mal (Muhammad Abdul Lathief), a professional story teller who told Bilal bin Rabah story, mom and kid story telling finalists, who performed their own story, the two alumni of HI, who told us about their success story as young writers, and also a young singer Cilla and HI choir who sang some songs to cheer up the audiences. Last but not least, this event was closed by the announcement of the winners of writing and story telling competition.
